Last Sunday I went to McDaids, Midleton, Co. Cork to video an album launch for my friend Bobby Lee, a well respected and talented musician from Ireland. His album “The Future History” has 9 tracks and is available for preview, mp3 download or cd at Cd Baby

Here’s one review describing the album:

Mark Mc Clelland - Backstage Traffic

“The Future History ” Bobby’s current album is a collection of beautifully crafted songs that will take your soul, look after it for a few hours and then hand it back with a smile that says, “Yes everything’s going to be alright.” And you know what? You believe it.

Of his many achievements this is a very memorable one:

Irish Guitarist of the Future - Fender
In 1996 Bobby Lee was hailed as “Irish Guitarist of the Future” judged by Donal Gallagher brother of the great Rory Gallagher. The prize was a guitar and amp, and a trip to London to Fender’s 50th anniversary celebrations at the Wembley Conference Centre. There he received the award in front of a glittering audience which included, Hank Marvin of The Shadows, Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac & Albert Lee amongst others.

The Video

I will be editing the rest of the footage in the new year as a promo dvd for Bobby. What was interesting about the video shoot was it was filmed and captured direct to external hard drive as apposed to dv tape. This was my first time trying this technique and it worked out a treat, it was ready for editing straight away.

Please head over to one of the links below and support Bobby Lee, an artist of well deserved recognition…

I had a reason this week to try and find the actual direct path to an.flv on YouTube, I was trying out the excellent JW Media Player by Jeroen Wijering it supports playback of flv files among a host of other formats heres a quick excerpt from his website

“JW Media Player supports playback of a single media file of any format the Flash Player can handle (MP3, FLV, SWF, JPG, PNG and GIF). It also supports RSS, XSPF and ATOM playlist (with mixed mediatypes and advertisement possibilities), a wide range of flashvars (settings) for tweaking both behavior and appearance and an extensive, documented javascript/actionscript API.”

The Problem?

While coding the xml playlist file for the player I tried adding a YouTube video but couldn’t find the actual path to the .flv file on YouTube’s servers. YouTube dont allow downloading of the video files and they have the path to the files pretty well hidden. So with a little tinkering around I came up with this trick…

The Solution!

I used this website www.keepvid.com to decode the url from YouTube. First go to YouTube and load a video, copy the url in the address bar it should show something like this:

http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=TvedUxLtZKQ

Now go to the www.keepvid.com website and paste the url into the box provided, select Youtube from the drop down options and then click the Download button.
You can download the file direct but in this case I only need the path to the flv file so just under the url input box there will appear a Download box like the image below.

Right click on the >>Download Link << and select “Copy Link Location” (Firefox) or “Copy Shortcut” (Internet Explorer)

KeepVid

Now paste the result into notepad or directly to your xml file it will show like this:

http://chi-v48.chi.youtube.com/get_video?video_id=TvedUxLtZKQ

One thing left to do, add .flv to the end of the url so it ends up like this:

http://chi-v48.chi.youtube.com/get_video?video_id=TvedUxLtZKQ.flv

That’s it, the final url path to your YouTube video.

I know that this tip breaches the YouTube terms and conditions as using a third party player to stream the flv is therefore stealing their bandwidth and not allowing them to run any advertising on the video page, but hey! rules are sometimes broken and this tip is for purely experimental purposes! ;)

Time Saver Tip…

KeepVid provide a handy link to drag to your links toolbar it’s a great time saver if you intend on getting paths to video files or just to download videos files direct for free. I have it here for you, simply drag the button below to your Links Toolbar and when you are viewing a video on any website just hit the link on you toolbar and it redirects you to their website with the video ready for download or just to get the path.

Keep It!

Hope this helps you…..

While reading a post in Robert Sweetnams Blog today about the surge of cocaine related deaths this week in Ireland it made me stop and think about the pitfalls of drug abuse in general. There are people who don’t do drugs and wonder why other people do. Its a freedom of choice for those who take drugs such as heroin, cocaine, speed, ecstasy or cannabis etc. its a form of escapism from the normal hum drum of their lives. There’s an inner emptiness that needs to be filled and by taking a drug of choice it fills that void in their lives.

I do feel sorry for the families of those lost and its plain to see that drug abuse affects all classes in life. No doubt modern living and expectations all play a major role as to why people choose to abuse drugs. Some people are happy in their skin and some are not but I don’t think these deaths will send out a message to people to stop, it’s only a matter of time till another person hits the headlines.

This brings me to an article I came across some time ago and for me explains some of the feelings I have expressed above. Take time to read it.

Are You Once Born or Twice Born?

It was William James, philosopher who wrote that there are two kinds of people in this world the ‘Once-Born‘ and the ‘Twice-Born‘.

Once-Born people do not stray from the familiar territory of who they think they are, and what they think is expected of them. If fate pushes them to the edge of Dante’s famous dark woods ‘where the straight way is lost’ they turn back. They don’t want to learn something new from life’s darker lessons. They stay with what seems safe, and what is acceptable to their family and society. They stick to what they already know but don’t necessarily want.

Once-Born people may go through life and never even know what lies beyond the woods-or that there are woods at all. Perhaps a once-born person awakens one morning and feels the beckoning finger of fate loosening disturbing questions:

Is this all there is to life?

Will I always feel the same?

Do I not have some purpose to fulfill, some greater kindness to give, some inner freedom to taste?

And then he gets out of bed and dresses for work, and he doesn’t attend to the soul’s questions. The next morning, and all the next mornings, he lives as if the soul was a figment of a flighty imagination. This inattention makes him confused, or numb, or sad, or angry.

A Twice-Born person pays attention when the soul pokes it’s head through the clouds of a half-lived life. Whether through choice or calamity, the Twice-Born person goes into the woods, loses the straight way, makes mistakes, suffers loss, and confront that which needs to change within himself in order to live a more genuine and radiant life.

Twice-Born people use the difficult change in their outer lives to make the harder changes within. While Once-Born people avoid or deny or bitterly accept the unpredictable changes of real life, Twice-Born people use adversity for awakening betrayal, illness, divorce, the demise of a dream, the loss of a loved one-all of these can function as initiations into deeper life. The journey from once-born to twice-born brings us to a crossroads where the old ways of doing things are no longer working but a better way lies somewhere at the far edge of the woods. We are afraid to step into those woods but even more afraid to turn back. To turn back is one kind of death. to go forward is another.

The first kind of death ends in ashes, the second leads toward rebirth. For some of us, the day arrives when we step willingly into the woods. A longing to wake up, to feel more alive, to feel ’something’ spurs us beyond our fear. Some of us resist like hell until the forces of fate deliver a crisis. Some of us get sick and tired of filling an inner emptiness with drugs or drinks or food, and we turn and face our real hunger: our soul hunger, Twice-Born people trade the safety of the known for the power of the un-known.

Something calls them into the woods, where the straight path vanishes, and there is no running back, only going through. This is not easy. It is not a made-up fairy tale. It is very real and difficult. To face our shadow, the dragons and hags that we have spent a lifetime running away from is perhaps the most difficult journey we will ever take. But it is there, in the shadows, that we retrieve our hidden parts, learn our lessons, and give birth to the wise and mature self. From an experience, we know that the difficulty of the dark journey is matched only by it’s rewards.

I know, that every person in this world is offered, time and time again-the chance to take the voyage from once-born innocence, to Twice-born wisdom.

How to download and save Bebo video files - the easy way.

I was asked by my friend Shane Supple if it was possible to download a video that was uploaded to Bebo.com.

It is not as straight forward as you may think, having tinkering around with source code etc. I discovered that when you upload a video to Bebo you are actually storing your file on www.videoegg.com so I took the embed source code that Bebo provide which reveals the first part of this tip.

Go to a  page that displays a bebo video, you will know it is a bebo video because their logo is embedded as a watermark over the video then scroll down till you see the “Embed” part of the page.

Example:

download or save Bebo video files - the easy way

Copy the embed code and paste it into Notepad, it will show something like this:

<embed width=”425″ height=”350″ src=”http://static.videoegg.com/videoegg/loader.swf” FlashVars=”bgColor=FFFFFF
&file=http://download.videoegg.com/gid329/cid1124/E7/7N/1175278125C1Zp0f2MW8
zokcDy8sWC
&autoPlay=false
&forcePlay=false&logo=&allowFullscreen=true” quality=”high” allowScriptAccess=”always” bgcolor=”#FFFFFF” scale=”noscale”wmode=”window” name=”VE_Player” align=”middle” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” pluginspage=”http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer” /><br><a href=”http://bebo.com/watchtv”>Watch More Videos</a> Uploaded by <a href=”http://bebo.com/watchuser/436885205″>www.bebo.com/De-baw</a>

All you are interested here is the part:

http://download.videoegg.com/gid329/cid1124/E7/7N/1175278125C1Zp0f2MW8
zokcDy8sWC

To download and save that file you need to put _high.flv to the end of the URL string in order to download that file in .flv format.

So the new URL would be:
http://download.videoegg.com/gid329/cid1124/E7/7N/1175278125C1Zp0f2MW8
zokcDy8sWC_high.flv

Type or copy/paste this URL into a browser window and you will be prompted to download the .flv file

Try it here: http://download.videoegg.com/gid329/cid1124/E7/7N/1175278125C1Zp0f2MW8
zokcDy8sWC_high.flv

How to play an .flv file

You need to download a FLV Player to play back the .flv file. There are many free flv players available on the internet I use Wimpy FLV Player. No installation needed as its a stand alone player and it also supports drag and drop. It is available for both Mac and Windows.

Download it here: http://www.wimpyplayer.com/products/wimpy_standalone_flv_player.html

There is probably lots of software and tricks to download video from Bebo but I think this is the quickest way around it. Hope this helps you…
